I did it exactly as described.
I was talking generally about exchange, because I think that something
is not quite right in my settings, but am out of ideas anyway. Perhaps

You must fill all fields and when clicking 'Next' and getting the
error, you kill Outlook. You must NOT select "Exchange server" - you
must select the Active Sync option - those are two completely separate
things.
