I think I have seen something like this . did you upgrade or is it a fresh install ? If you delete the sqllite acl file in Thunderbird's profile/calendar-data it fixes it .. Let me know if this helps. I've gone though lots of permutations and found a few small issues with 1.3.9 like this ..
