Yes you can use SOGo just for contacts and calendar but with some
workarounds when connecting with Thunderbird 2 SOGo.
When Thunderbird connects to SOGo it does not ask you for a user name -
just a password assuming that your default Thunderbird mail account is
the same as SOGo.
In case you use SOGo just for contacts and calendar you need to create a
fake mail account in Thunderbird (with the same user name as in SOGo)
and make it a default one. In this configuration you can connect to SOGo
with Thinderbird.

I am installing sogo now and have a few questions:
- I am not running an IMAP server (rather a POP3). is it possible to
integrate Sogo into this environment?
- If I cannot, is it possible to use Sogo for only contact / address
