I had got exactly the same problem with VMWare Workstation. After playing around with all options for 2 hours w/o working IDE Disk writes I created a new disk in the VM, started sysresccd and copied all files from the hard disk provided (mounted r/o) to the new disk. After that I changed GRUB and the system booted w/o problems. The second pitfall was that the network adapter was recognized as eth1 but that can be solved easily. It seems that you cannot use the image out of the box on newer VMWare versions.
