You don't need to host the engine on the gluster cluster. I know people you have hosted the engine on a bare metal (pacemaker cluster) , so feel free to experiment. The only requirement is that tge engine needs to be able to communicate with the hosts (I'm not sure if layer 2 connectivity is necessary).
