There is a migration script but your stipulated it is from a backup... so I guess that wouldn't work. I haven't tried it but I think if you just copy everything over where it needs to be for the disk image (assuming ploop), and created a config for it... might it just work? If not, then you could create a new container... matching as closely as possible the distro from the original... and then mount it, remove everything from it, and extract/copy your backup into the new container's filesystem... that should work.
