I've tried to reproduce this problem (ubu 10.04 + the repo OOo 3.2.0) and cannot. Can anyone else?
Possibly might be an error in the metrics for font you're using? (I tried arial and TNR, both OK). Have you tried a different editor plus the exact same font and text (gedit maybe)? At least that might rule out OOo itself.
Also, I'd suggest looking at some of the postscript you've created, and seeing what's in that. Might give a clue. Maybe post (on the web) a sample of what's causing the problem (OOo + PS + pdf) if you're still in the dark.
