Kate,
No response from you on the current state of affairs. Without more detail,
and some responses it is difficult to provide assistance.

I suggest you download and install Apache OpenOffice Portable from
portableapps.com.
https://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable
...and use that to open your documents.

Why? Because it is Apache OpenOffice and the "install" does not affect any
of your system settings.

Once "installed" it can be used to open your documents. If the documents
are still gobbledygook then it is a problem with the documents. (NOTE: The
problem could be corrupted files or security settings on the files) If the
problem has gone away then it is a problem with the Apache OpenOffice
installation on your computer.

Try that and tell us what happens so further assistance can be provided if
needed.

Please reply to [email protected] so everyone can see what
is happening with your issue.
