Sounds like the issue is in how files in a folder are being protected - not OpenOffice. What operating system are you suing? I messed with it for two days and finally got it so I could copy it, open it, edit it, BUT not save any of my work. I even made a Copy of my master spread sheet and thought I could build a new sheet and re input all data from the original. But I Still cannot save anything I do.
