Ray - I'm not sure this exactly matches your description of what happens, but is it possible that you've pressed the Insert key on your keyboard? That changes you from the usual Insert mode to the Overwrite mode. The shape of the mouse cursor changes and the word 'Overwrite' appears at the bottom of the Writer window. Pressing the Insert key again returns you to the Insert mode.
