As you have been sending mails to the users list - users@openoffice.apache.org - that would presumably be the list to which you want to subscribe. To assist you further, I'll repeat below the information for that list, taken from the link I provided earlier:

Users Mailing List (Public)

This list is for users, for questions about OpenOffice, for feature requests, for discussions about the product and project, etc.

    Subscribe: users-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org
    Post (after subscription): users@openoffice.apache.org
    Unsubscribe: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org
Searchable Archives: Markmail, Nabble, Mail Archive
    Apache Archives: current, legacy

Note that some of the text above, points 4 and 5,  has links on the web page which I haven't included here..

Thank you, David.

I have downloaded and installed 4.1.7 from the link you suggested.

Re the spellcheck problem, I used the "python" script to repair it. It has stopped putting the red wiggly lines under everything, but now does not indicate words which I know are misspelled. The spellcheck window shows no dictionaries selected, although Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages shows something (dictionaries?) selected - see attached.

I connected to the link you gave to subscribe to the list, but cannot follow the instructions as I have no idea what list I need to subscribe to, nor what lists are available, so I did not know what to substitute for the "xyz" in the subscribe email.

For your spelling check problem please see https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=89050

The update problem is a known issue; version 4.1.7 is the latest version of Apache OpenOffice. Just go to http://www.openoffice.org/download/ if you need to download a later version than you have. For extensions, you'll have to check the individual extension pages for updates.

Since you are not subscribed to this list you may not see all the replies to your query. To subscribe to Apache OpenOffice mailing lists go to http://openoffice.apache.org/mailing-lists.html

As a courtesy I have sent a copy of this reply to you as well as to the mailing list. Do Not reply to me personally but just to the list at <users@openoffice.apache.org> - replies to my personal email address will be ignored.

Currently using v 4.1.5

1. SPELL CHECK
When I activate the spell checker, it is unable to recognise any words in my documents as correct - all are underlined in red, indicating misspellings. I have tried the English (Australian), English (US) and English (UK) dictionaries with the same results for each of them.

2. UPDATE
When I click on Help - Check for Updates I get the message "Error reading data from the Internet. Server error message: " but no server error message follows. Connection to the internet by email client (Thunderbird) and internet browser (Google Chrome) have no problems.

Greg
