Save as the native OpenDocument Format - .odt for Writer, .ods for Calc
etc. If you haven't saved "hours of work" you are at least risking an
unexpected shutdown of your computer losing your work.
If you must save in a foreign format, e.g. MS Office, only do that once
you have finished working on the document.
