I don't have Apache OpenOffice installed at the moment, but I remember that there was a setting for this when I did. In LibreOffice I find it at Tools → Options… → LibreOffice Calc → Formula. I know LibreOffice is a lot different from Apache OpenOffice these days, but hopefully this takes you a little bit closer to the answer.
