Ok I’ve opened the workbook.  selected the sheet.  Hightighted the 2 columns I want to sort (A1:b5) and the sort function is still grayed out.  Its like that for the whole book.

You mentioned a Table this term is normally used in a Word document.

In a spreadsheet the whole document is one big table, so you most likely want to sort a Range of Cells not the whole sheet.

when I go to sort a table the sort option in data is grayed out.  how do I work around that?

If you haven't selected any column or row there is nothing to sort, quite logical isn't?
