Another thing to check if Alan's suggestion doesn't work or especially
if not all formulas are displayed is to make sure there are no blanks
(spaces) at the beginning of the =SUM line. The = (equal character)
must be the first character and it is not always obvious. That bit me a
while back and I spent hours trying to figure why some cells had the
correct result value and others had the formula displayed.

Tony,
If you mean that you see the text "=SUM(xxx:xxx)" displayed instead of the
number result then it is likelyi the "Display Formulas" option may be
ticked.
To disable the "Display Formulas" option and cause the number result to
display...
Select "Tools -> Options...:" from the menu
Select the "LibreOffice Calc -> View" path from the list of options on the
left
To the right, under the "Display" options check if "Formulas" is tic'd. If
it is, remove the tic.
Click "OK".
Number results will now be displayed.

How do I get the total of a column and when putting numbers in then
highlighting the column instead of getting SUM= how can I get numbers as
SUM= does not tell me much ie= 13425
The Sum= sums the content of all selected cells, if you want the total of
a column just select that column.
By the way if you right click on Sum= you see other options e.g. Average
or Count
