In OpenOffice /File /Open, then use the navigation buttons to move to the directory holding the existing document. Alternately, right click on a document of the type you wish to open with OpenOffice, select Open With from the popup and then select OpenOffice from the applications offered. At the bottom of the Open With window there may be an "always open with this application" words to that effect) link.
