I indicated (but you've removed) that you need to toggle on the
Drawing toolbar, and yes: it appears by default at the bottom of the
window, not the top.

Didn't see this - where does it show?
If you click on the Fontwork item - so that you see the coloured
handles - it should appear automatically. If you follow the
instructions I gave, after you press Esc, that is the condition it
should be in. In any case, you can toggle it on at View | Toolbars >
| Fontwork. The toolbar floats by default, perhaps at top left, but
where (and when) it appears may depend on what you have done with it
previously.
This doesn't seem to work directly in impress.
Er, it does for me!
I guess you could get a screenshot from writer and paste the image....
No need for that, anyway: with the Fontwork item selected (with the
coloured handles showing), you can simply copy it.
