Make sure "Automatic file name extension" checkbox is checked. Mary, Your file name does not have a ".doc", or any other name extension, so Windows didn't know which program to use. Which is also the the reason others can't open it. Simply follow Rory's advice. You say that this document was created in Apache OpenOffice, but the document's internal structure shows that it was generated by some form of two stage external OLE (Object Linking & Embedding) process. Additionally, if you are going to create documents in Apache OpenOffice, it is wise to save in the native ".odt" format and then send copies in other formats (eg. MS Word) as required. This will reduce possible problems your documents might be exposed to.
