Check the setting in OpenOffice /Tools /options /OpenOffice /Language settings There are two main selections: Languages settings should read User Interface: English (UK) Localke setting: English (UK) Decimal Separator key: checkbox "Same as locale setting" Default languages for Documents: English (UK) Leave all else unchecked Writing aids should read Hunspell Spellchecker checked Linhyphen Hyphenator checked OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus checked User-defined dictionaries standard [all] checked soffice [all] checked Options Check spelling as you type checked Check grammar as you type checked Press OK, rthen exit OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Easiest to restart computer. Now see if all is well.
