I use Apache OpenOffice all the time and I've never seen this, but on the other hand I use Calc almost all the time, and I use it on a Linux desktop (Ubuntu 14.04). Anyway, it sounds like a bug, since it didn't happen with earlier versions. Maybe you should file a bug report and then install an older version (the latest version that used to work on your system would probably be a good choice) and use that version until the problem is solved.
