If you have a GMail account (if you don't, make one, they're free) open up Google Drive and drop one of your documents from your computer onto the GoogleDrive folder. I know it works to open simple documents. Don't know how complex your dissertation is, e.g. headers, footers, footnotes, tables, etc, and don't know how well this technique works on complex documents. Anyway give it a try. If your documents open then the problem you're having is on your Mac for sure but at least this would let you open your documents.
