I use Windows 7, home version, and have Open Office 4.0.1. I used Open Office Calc to download an Excel document and was able to write on it as well as save it but it would not open from my documents in order to attach it and send it VIA email. Do I have to have my email linked with Open Office--there was a message to that effect. If so, where is there information on how to do that?

If you saw that message, it seems that you could, in fact, open the document file but that you had difficulty using File | Send > | Document as E-mail... (or similar). This facility relies on your having a mail client (an e-mailing program) actually on your PC. I see that you are using Gmail and there is no identification of any mail client in the headers of your message, so I'm guessing that you are using the web interface to Gmail. There is no way to associate the facility in OpenOffice with such a web interface, I'm afraid.

But there is no problem: all you have to do is to save the document somewhere convenient and then use the facility provided in Gmail to attach the document file to a message there. There are reasons why you may find this more convenient anyway. You will want to save a spreadsheet document, for example, in OpenOffice's native Open Document Format format, .ods, for your own future use. But you may sometimes need to accommodate your recipient - if they need to edit the document further - by saving a copy in Microsoft Excel's .xls format, or - if they need just to read or print the document - by exporting a copy as PDF. In such a case, you may wish to keep a copy of the version you intend to send and even to review it before you send it. If so, then attaching the file to a message in the Gmail web interface is no inconvenience.

I trust this helps.
