Does the text print the wrong size, or are you talking about its appearance on screen? Remember that the screen appearance (unlike the actual print size) is influenced by the zoom factor in the view settings.
Go to View | Zoom... and experiment with the settings there to see what suits you. Perhaps start with Optimal and Automatic.
These settings are retained between documents and uses of OpenOffice and even across reinstallation or updating, so this fits in with your suggested symptoms.
