it means that openoffice cannot recognise the document's type (doc, odt, rtf

check the folder in which the document resides for a tiny file with a name like 
'.~lock.filename.ext#' and delete it to unlock your file.

Whenever I select either, it opens a document with 6 pages of hash-tags and no 
text.

that sounds not very optimistic; your document may have gone forever. this
