Several great answers to this question, but the original poster probably saw none of them ;-)
It is a pain, but remember, users are not required to subscribe. So be sure to cc your response to their email address, not just the list address. If you are curious in checking to see if any particular post comes from a subscribed user, look at the full headers for the email. If you see a header line like: Delivered-To: moderator for users@openoffice.apache.org Then this means the user's post went through moderation because they were not a subscriber. Yes, this sucks. Gravity sucks as well.
