But when did you save the file?  If you deleted some text, did a
control z and then the program crashed, then the file on disk has not
changed.  Unless you did something like: delete some text, save the
file, did a control-z and then it crashed?  But if you did that then
you were vulnerable to many ways of losing your document, such as a
power outage.

If the information is critical it might be retrieved using a sector editor. Search the drive for a phrase known to be in the file and if you're lucky, the rest will be with it. When editing important files it's a good idea to keep incremental backups. When a file is saved with the same name, the original
is effectively over written and won't be in the trash.
