I regularly use AOO to open files built in the 1990s, without any problems.
Some are complex, convoluted whoppers (such as one 300+ page book that has a
great many format & font shifts, photos, tables, etc).

Why do you say it won't open stuff from back then?  I don't have any files
from then handy, but I do have a Writer SXW document from 2004.  I have no
problem opening it.  Also, the ODF file standard was developed from the
original OpenOffice (StarOffice) formats.
