This is a few layers above DBus/uDev, but more on the Desktop environment level. I also think that we need to take efforts to make OpenOffice finally deal with media (for embedded objects). Sun never wanted to depend on DM specific media frameworks like gstreamer, and preffered a very obsolete JMF (Java Media Framework) which quite honestly never really worked as expected. Freedesktop have some frameworks like Telepathy, and KDE has phonon to deal with media.
