Not sure why  a doc you created would be read only, some reasons are 
permissions on the file, ie wrong user or drive access. Templates are 
also read only, if you accidently saved it as a template it will be 
read only.

You can always save the file to a location you know you have rights to, 
this should allow you to open it again as editable.

It would be helpfull to mention operating system also, I use Linux, 
don't know Windows, there could be differences there.
