A helpful contributor has, it seems, finally found the cause of the bug, and posted a workaround here:

It's a bug in Java itself, so it will ultimately need to be fixed in OpenJDK. Meanwhile the NetBeans developers are discussing if we can find a way to have the patch above included in NetBeans.
