Just did. Yeah, having to copy a settings.xml from the global conf dir
into ~/.m2 is an unnecessary step and it does differ from the
CLI....bad-wrong.

As a workaround, you can use the just released m2eclipse 0.0.10 and copy
the settings.xml to your user-level settings (~/.m2/settings.xml)
(resolved by MNGECLIPSE-29).
