Yes I tried and I get :
java version "1.6.0_14"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)

After executing that(if I understood you correctly) I get actually nothing
special:
r...@ubuntu-jaunty-amd64-webtv:/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin# java
Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
(to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
(to execute a jar file)
