That's the problem, you need a newer version of smplayer, at least
smplayer-14.9.0.6672; that was the first version of smplayer to add
support for mpv.

smplayer detects which player (mplayer or mpv) is being used and
modifies the cli flags accordingly. So with mplayer it'd use -noquiet,
whereas with mpv it'd use --no-quiet .
