These scripts are for something completely different, but the web
page here documents the nonsense I discovered and how I worked
around it to trigger some stuff with udev:

However, gnome-settings-daemon may already have some hooks for
fiddling with input device settings (like mice) on udev events,
but I'm not sure I ever figured out how the settings-daemon stuff
worked.
