I've been using evince a lot during my mastergrade studies, and it worked for me. For "special cases" as e.g. pdf annotation I've been using Xournal. I agree that okular is somewhat omnipotent, but installing it will blow my system with a lot of KDE-libs (I run awesome on my laptop and XFCE on my PC).
