I suggest either starting in multi-user.target (runlevel 3) or get to a shell 
with control-alt-f2 at the login screen. Then yum upgrade. This will get you a 
much newer kernel which includes many new things related to video, and it'll 
also get you an updated gnome-shell. The desktop shouldn't crash. So if it 
still does after upgrading, then look for or file bugs.
