I'm currently running four big monitors on an ATI Radeon HD, so if you can fit three of those cards into a box, that 's 12 monitors right off the bat, and you could probably add some DP splitters to get more. I've tried a matrox card. In theory, it can drive up to 12 monitors with four triple-head-to-go adapters, but it had some driver issues that kept me from using it (mostly dealing with vlc and youtube) and they didn't officially (or actually, when I reported bugs) support the version of Fedora I was running anyway.
