I believe you said you installed the nVidia driver at some point.  But, you 
didn't mention the procedure as to how you did that.

One question, do you have a /usr/lib/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf file or 
any *conf file in that directory that contains "blacklist nouveau"
