My current favorite bug to blame all mysterious failures on (especially if they occur at a yum install time or during cron runs) is this one: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1043212 That mentions one mysterious symptom involving the nologin file, but in fact the bug is about systemd completely flaking out and many other symptoms have been documented in other bugs (this was just the earliest I've seen). I've never had it make my system reboot and freeze, so that's a symptom I haven't seen yet, but it does seem possible.
