Well, let's go out one step form Fedora desktop though, to the Fedora cloud and Fedora server targets. In cloud deployments, email notifications are a definite non-starter, because no one is going to ever log into individual machines to check, and outgoing mail from cloud networks is likely to just be dropped. On servers, an MTA is often appropriate, but traditional servers are built to fit their niche and their specific needs.
