I used Xorg -configure as root, moved /root/xorg.config.new to /etc/X11/xorg.config and then, as my regular user, ran startxfce4. Same thing, with the same lines in the file. I removed all references to mouse and keyboard from the file and now I get this in Xorg.0.log:

[ 306.954] (II) The server relies on udev to provide the list of input devices.
        If no devices become available, reconfigure udev or disable 
AutoAddDevices.

Looks like something's wrong with udev, but what?
