It's a good idea to try and build yourself and expand your skills but it's
not for everyone. The only thing I would add to Ed's recommendation is to
do (as root):

yum-builddep /path/to/srpm/

which will take care of installing any package specific dependencies so you
don't have to do it manually.

If you're really not interesting in trying to build your own packages,
here's the easy way out:
