Having problem keeping xscreensaver running

Haven't quited figured out yet whether xscreensaver fails to start in the first place, or it starts but dies at some point. The bottom that at some point the monitor does not get turned off due to inactivity; and running screensaver manually at that point results in a complaint that it's not running, and gives me an option to start.

Anyone else having this problem?
