It does seem a rather brutal approach.  Considering that there are quite
a few "system default" settings that people want to play with, that need
configuring all over the place, it's a shame that we don't have a
*single* /etc/defaults location that lets one easily set run levels,
display managers, and other things, in a way that's obvious to
understand just by reading the current configurations set in it.

As opposed to making links, finding how GDM is started/chosen, likewise
for Gnome/KDE/others, etc.
