I used my laptop to search out a thread on removing nVidia cruft on the fedoraforum, because I remembered that it had what looked to be a good suggestion. It was. I did the following as root:

yum remove *\nvidia*\
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
reboot

all of which can be done without network access. There were still a few things to tidy up because disks weren't in the same order as they were before, and one of them isn't (yet) connected, but that wasn't very hard. Thunderbird still didn't want to start but before I started nuking things I did a system update because there were probably updates for F16 between the time it went into surgery and EOL, and one of them was another Tbird update that fixed things. There are still a few things needing my attention, but nothing urgent except for using preupgrade one more time to get to F17. Later, of course, I'll try fedup on my laptop and see how well it does with F18, which will tell me if I want to do the same on the desktop or not. Thanx for the help you gave me, and I hope that the above fix gets remembered for future reference.
