I'm not running ypserv, just ypbind, and sometimes it just isn't working when I boot. Tossing into rc.local something like /bin/bash -c 'sleep 10 ; service ypbind restart' > /dev/null 2>&1 < /dev/null & always leaves me with a functioning NIS.
