   I didn't find that with google, and even with your pointer it took
   some effort to find but:

       class MenuEditor(object):
            def __init__(self):
                self.applications = Menu('applications-gnome.menu')
                self.applications.tree.connect('changed', self.menuChanged)

   Adding the "-gnome" in
   "/lib/python2.7/site-packages/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py" seems to have
   fixed things. At least alacarte starts the gui now.
