xrandr: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2#Using_xrandr_to_do_useful_things Start with xrandr with no arguments to see which displays are detected. I use: xrandr --output VGA-0 --left-of LVDS to sort out which display is where for me. Seems to be more reliable than the GUI tools.
