My mention of XFCE was to show it is probably not desktop dependent[1].

The key bit is, the problem for me happens when there is a saved
connection with a single quote in it's name (e.g. ROOSTER'S, name of a
pub I visited once).  While saving the connection NM doesn't escape the
single quote in the DEVICE field.  This unescaped single quote leads to
failure of the script: /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d/56dhclient, and
suspend fails.
