This is because you violated the cardinal rule: never try to update your
laptop while you are on the road :-)  Especially if you are in a place
called Chaos Manor; that's just ASKING for trouble.

I learned this the hard way when I was at a conference one time; I lost
all access to the net (and my e-mail) for almost two days before I could
get the damned thing working again. And, of course, when I got home and
ran another update, everything worked fine.
